Instructors

Eastern Iowa Arts Academy provides students with excellent leadership and instruction in all areas of the arts. Currently, EIAA has over 45 staff members who specialize in art, dance, drama, creative writing, cultural arts and music instruction.

David Griffin

BIO

EIAA Executive Director - David W. Griffin is the founder of the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy and brings multiple years of experience in education and special event coordinating in arts initiatives. David received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1991 with an emphasis in Piano Performance and K-12 Choral Music. He received his Masters Degree in Secondary Educational Administration from the University of Northern Iowa in 2002. He spent the first 5 years of his teaching career at Waverly Shell-Rock Jr. High School and is currently in his 16th year of teaching middle school choral music in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He currently teaches choral music at Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

David's creative and innovative teaching style has earned him many awards and special recognitions in and around the state of Iowa, including; the Alternative Services Child Advocate Volunteer Award, the Golden Apple Award, \"Teacher of the Day\" award by the Iowa House of Representatives, \"Teacher of the Week\" in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, and director of the 1996 Boys Opus Honor Choir.  Griffin has been featured in numerous newspaper articles and publications around Iowa and the Midwest. He founded and directed the Cedar Rapids Young Artists Festival from 2000-2004, and, played a key role in the development and implementation of McKinley Middle School of the Arts in 1999.

In the academy, Griffin offers the exciting \"JUNK RHYTHM\" class, which uses everyday household objects in creating music and vocal music ensembles.

Guitar IIIGuitar III is a continuation of the Guitar II class offered in the fall of 2012. (Students did not have to participate in the fall class in order to register for Guitar III, however, intermediate guitar experience is required). Students will continue to see the guitar as a form of creativity, expres-sion and shared communication. Students will study ad-vanced chord structure, substitutions, different strum-ming and picking techniques. Also, students will analyze basic song structure and songwriting while learning the basics of playing solo, and with different sized groups. Classic Singers Show ChoirIn this fun and exciting class, you will sing classic pop and musical theatre music while incorporating a wide variety of dance styles. Students will learn step by step the basics of jazz and Broadway choreography and healthy vocal technique. Show Choir combines your love of singing, dancing, and acting with the technical knowledge to become more proficient in each artistic ar-ea, and keeps you hopping in a positive, energetic, and explosive environment.music0.00HardingTuesday

Academy Voce' Academy Voce’ was established in the summer of 2013 at EIAA’s Arts for Life Campus. The select group of middle school students learned a variety of music and performed throughout the community. This coming spring, Mr. Griffin is opening up Academy Voce’ to any interested male/female student who wants to improve their vocal abilities and performance skills. Academy Voce’ will be one of the featured performing ensembles at EIAA’s United Arts Showcase, on Friday, May 9th, at Kennedy High School at 7:00 p.m. The group will also perform at Harding Middle School’s ”Spring Sing Extravaganza” on Thursday, May 15. Academy Voce’ will continue rehearsals in the summer and perform at a variety of community events throughout the summer and fall.music0.00HardingMonday

Rock Band AvalancheBring your friends and form a band! Aspiring musicians (beginners to intermediate) will form groups to collaborate with using guitars, keyboards, drums, or your own instrument.
